The Obama campaign is up with a new Spanish-language ad featuring First Lady Michelle Obama being interviewed by the "Latina Oprah," Cristina Saralegui. Description in English:
"Why is it so important for Latinos to vote in this election?"
First Lady Michele Obama:
"So much is at stake. Comprehensive immigration reform. Making sure that health care is not repealed. Education -- making sure that every young person in this country has access to good schools. I could go on and on and on, but that's why the vote is critical."
Video below the fold.
The First Lady's reference to "comprehensive immigration reform" is important because in an interview with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register, published in its entirety, President Obama stated that the first issue he must deal with is the "fiscal cliff" and sequestration looming on January 1, for which he hopes to break the Tea-Publican stranglehold against any new tax revenues from those making more than $250,000 per year, and more ominously, achieving the "grand bargain" on spending, revenue, and deficit reduction that he sought during the GOP hostage taking over the federal debt ceiling.
The other "big ticket" item President Obama hopes to address next year is comprehensive immigration reform:
The second thing I’m confident we’ll get done next year is immigration reform. And since this is off the record, I will just be very blunt. Should I win a second term, a big reason I will win a second term is because the Republican nominee and the Republican Party have so alienated the fastest-growing demographic group in the country, the Latino community. And this is a relatively new phenomenon. George Bush and Karl Rove were smart enough to understand the changing nature of America. And so I am fairly confident that they’re going to have a deep interest in getting that done. And I want to get it done because it’s the right thing to do and I've cared about this ever since I ran back in 2008.
