Press release from the Arizona Democratic Party:
LD-11 Republicans Out of Touch With Arizona
Al Melvin and Steve Smith support outrageous bills at the expense of Arizona families
PHOENIX, AZ--Arizonans can expect a continued outpouring of outlandish bills as long as the Tea Party is allowed to retain its death-like grip at the Legislature.
One lawmaker who never fails to contribute to this ever-flowing stream of bad legislation is LD-11 Republican candidate Al Melvin. In his three years at the Capitol, Senator Melvin has introduced bills worthy of a permanent spot on Comedy Central.
However, Al Melvin isn't the only one to blame.
His teammate in the district is Senator Steve Smith, a House Republican candidate. Together, they have supported some of the most outrageous bills the Arizona legislature has seen in a long time.
“Senators Al Melvin and Steve Smith have proven time and again that they do not have the best interests of Arizonans at heart,” Arizona Democratic Party Press Secretary DB Mitchell said. “It is time that we hold these lawmakers accountable.”
As the primary sponsor of SCM 1004, Melvin urged Congress to allow Arizona to access funds that would be used to build a facility for the disposal of spent nuclear fuel [SCM 1004]. Not only does this proposition raise numerous public safety issues, but it reveals just how out-of-touch he really is with Arizona’s families.
Senators Melvin and Smith are also guilty of supporting nearly $3 billion in cuts to public education [JLBC].Thanks to them, Center on Budget and Policy Priorities in Washington, D.C. recently ranked Arizona as having the deepest state funding cuts to schools over the past five years [report].
“Arizona can’t afford lawmakers like Melvin and Smith,” said Mitchell. “We need serious, rational lawmakers who will focus on improving public education and easing the burden on middle class families.”
It is sad to think that if Melvin, Smith and Co. had spent less time worrying about nuclear fuel and stripping money from our public education the legislature might have passed a couple bills that could actually improve the livelihood of Arizonans.
One thing that Arizona voters can be sure of is that the failed policies of Tea Party legislators like Melvin and Smith are not the solution to this state’s growing economic woes.
