TUSD has scheduled town hall meetings regarding its budget shortfall. TUSD's options to bridge shortfall of $17M sought in public meetings:
Three town hall meetings have been scheduled for next week to discuss the impending $17 million budget shortfall in the Tucson Unified School District.
Options that have been brought before the Governing Board during the last several months include school closures, program and salary cuts, and layoffs.
The meetings will be held:
• Monday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Sahuaro High School auditorium, 545 N. Camino Seco.
•Aug. 22 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Cholla High Magnet School auditorium, 2001 W. Starr Pass Blvd.
•Aug. 25 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Catalina Magnet High School auditorium, 3645 E. Pima St.
This phase of meetings will inform the community of the situation of declining enrollments and funding, and gather input to address the looming shortfall for the 2013-14 school year.
The town hall meetings will cover these key areas: achievement, finances, equity and diversity, services and facilities.
There will be two other phases of meetings that have yet to be scheduled.
In the second phase, a wide range of scenarios developed from the feedback gathered in next week's town halls will be presented to the public.
For the final phase, public meetings will be held in areas affected by the preferred scenarios. The meetings would provide information on specific school closures - should the board go in that direction - and serve as public hearings to satisfy state statutes related to school closures.
A website is being developed to provide information and opportunities for public feedback. (not yet up).
