Those of us old enough to have watched the Watergate hearings remember the string of Nixon people who claimed "I don't recall" every time they were asked questions about what they said or heard someone else say concerning the Watergate break-in and the cover-up. Unfortunately for them, Nixon made a bunch of tapes which recalled what was said just fine.
Now there's a new dodge in town: "Just kidding." Whenever politicians, usually of the Republican persuasion, make a racist, sexist or violent statement in public, their Get Out of Trouble Free card is that they didn't mean it, they were just joking.
The latest: Joe the Plumber said at a Lori Klein rally we need to build a fence along the border -- which isn't much of a big deal -- and "start shooting" -- which is pretty much a big deal. But according to Klein, J the P was just kidding about the shooting.
I guess he and Lori think the idea of shooting at brown people near the border is pretty funny. I can't wait to hear their collection of jokes about other people who don't look like them.
