It was jubliant at the Sinema primary party last night, as well it should have been. She ran a solid race and won easily, despite being outspent heavily in the closing weeks. (Disclosure: I've supported Sinema's campaign). Kyrsten's victory speech in my mind struck the right tone, heavily emphasizing the craziness, ineptitude, and immorality of Republican policies (my words, not hers). If she stays on that message, she'll win in November. If she does, stay tuned. She'll have an easy time defending the seat, until the next redistricting at least, and she has what it takes to lead. Give her a few terms to achieve modest seniority, and anything is possible. All the ingredients are there, and she's principled to boot. Imagine that.
Hats off to David Schapira. He ran a truly great campaign, doing just about as well as possible given the disparity in financial resources. He inspired an army of progressives to work tirelessly for him and word is he lobbed a personal call in to every Democrat in the district. Although he fell short, he earned a lot of respect from those who were paying attention. Hopefully, he'll stay in the game.
