The Pima County Democratic Party has weighed in on the "We don't like the results, and we have money" City Council recall effort.
Special interests in Tucson have set upon a new strategy: Don't like the results of an election? Just buy a new one.
Council Members Regina Romero and Karin Uhlich along with Mayor Bob Walkup are being targeted for recall, despite the fact that just two months ago, Tucson voters went to the polls and decided who they wanted to serve on the City Council. A small group of moneyed interests didn't like their decision and is now ready to pay signature gatherers to force Tucson voters back to the polls again.
The City Council faces a budget crisis it must address but instead would face the distraction of a recall election if this group gets their way. Council Member Romero and Mayor Walkup would be forced to run in 2010 and then immediately begin their 2011 campaigns. Council Member Uhlich was re-elected in November and the supporters of this recall supported Uhlich's opponent. Just when are they supposed to find the time to govern if they are constantly running for office?
"A small group of wealthy individuals should not be able to buy a 'do-over' and send voters back to the polls to re-affirm their will," said Pima County Democratic Party Chair Jeff Rogers. "Proving they can buy 15,000 signatures doesn't necessarily reflect that will."
